June, 2023. In the information age, the Internet has become an essential tool for most people. From browsing for information to keeping in touch with friends and family, the Internet has revolutionized the way we communicate, work, and learn. However, despite its many advantages, there are also many dangers associated with using the Internet. In this article, we’ll explore some of the top risks we face when browsing the web and how we can protect ourselves from them.
To obtain this data, we have spoken with INCIBE, which is a Spanish public organization whose main objective is to improve information security and cybersecurity in Spain.
First, it is necessary to consider that not all social networks are appropriate for minors. Each platform has its own security features and options, so it’s important to be aware of them before creating a social profile. In addition, it is essential that privacy measures be established that limit the visibility of publications, the reception of messages or comments from unknown people, and searches inside and outside the social network.
Because one of the biggest dangers on the internet is cybercrime. Cyber criminals can steal personal and financial information, infect computers with viruses, and perform scams. From phishing -a technique that aims to obtain private user data to access their bank accounts- to ransomware -malicious code that prevents the use of the equipment or systems it infects-, criminals use a variety of tactics to deceive people and steal their data. It’s important to take steps to protect yourself from these attacks by using strong passwords, regularly updating security software, and using caution when opening emails or clicking unfamiliar links.
It’s important to have a strong password, because if you don’t, it’s very likely to be leaked more easily. An example could be, if a hacker manages to obtain a list of leaked passwords, he could use them to access users’ email, social network, or digital banking accounts. This can lead to loss of confidential information, disclosure of private information, identity theft, or unauthorized transfer of funds. In addition, password leaks can also undermine users’ trust in online services and increase the need for additional security measures, such as two-factor authentication or using stronger, more unique passwords for each account.
According to Sheila Alonso Carrascal, INCIBE Communication and Marketing Technician, grooming occurs when an adult pretends to be a minor to establish a relationship with a child or adolescent for sexual purposes. This practice is becoming more common on social networks, where pedophiles can search for potential victims. It is important that young people are informed and know how to identify the behaviors of online predators, and that they are willing to report any suspicious situation to the authorities.
On the other hand, ghosting is an increasingly common practice among young people, especially on dating apps. It is about completely ignoring someone with whom a previous connection has been established without explanation or apparent reason. This can have a negative effect on the self-esteem and mental health of the ignored person. Therefore, it is important that young people understand the importance of respectful communication and empathy and know how to handle situations online in a healthy way.
Another relevant aspect is digital identity. Young people should be aware that their profile on social networks can have consequences in their personal and professional lives, both in the short and long term. Therefore, it is important that they build a positive profile and that they do not regret what they have published or said in the future. Posting responsibly, respecting yourself and others, is key to maintaining a good image and healthy relationships online.
Another aspect to consider is the relationships that are formed through social networks, any comment that is made can generate misunderstandings and personal conflicts, therefore, it is necessary to maintain a climate of trust and support towards friends and colleagues and be attentive if at any time they look at their mobile and they feel uncomfortable or worried. Creating a climate of trust is vital, so that those who are victims of harassment can trust.
If the problem is serious and cannot be solved easily, it is necessary to have trusted adults and, in some cases, even request the help of experts. The free telephone number 017 created by INCIBE is a resource available to minors who need help with any type of problem on the Internet. In these cases, it is important to save all the available evidence such as: photographs, messages and screenshots, in order to file the pertinent complaint and report the negative behaviors to the State security forces and bodies.
In conclusion, although the Internet is an invaluable tool for communication, work and entertainment, it also presents many dangers and risks. Cybercrime, cyberbullying, exposure to inappropriate content, and internet addiction are just a few of the dangers we face when browsing the web. However, there are steps we can take to protect ourselves and our loved ones. It is important to use strong passwords, regularly update your antivirus, use caution when opening emails from unknown people or companies, and if necessary report inappropriate behavior. By being aware of these dangers and taking preventative measures, we can take full advantage of the benefits of the internet without compromising our safety or that of our families.
